Tony Snow Resigns as White House Spokesman

"White House press secretary Tony Snow announced his resignation yesterday, the latest in a series of departures that have reshaped the upper echelons of the administration with the addition of more low-profile replacements well versed in the ways of Washington."

"Snow, who has been battling cancer, will be replaced by his deputy, Dana Perino, 35, a veteran press aide in the administration who is well liked by many of the reporters covering the president but has little of her predecessor's star power or on-camera experience."

Virginia GOP Sen. Warner Retiring in 2008

"Virginia Republican Sen. John W. Warner announced Friday afternoon in Charlottesville, Va., that he will not run next year for a sixth Senate term — a widely expected move that guarantees a strong bid by Democrats to take over the seat as they seek to defend or expand their razor-thin Senate majority."

"Republicans, meanwhile, will not cede the seat without a fight. Republican Rep. Thomas M. Davis III of Northern Virginia’s 11th District is seen as a near-certain candidate; former Gov. Jim Gilmore is also seen as contemplating a run."

Republican Thompson to Announce His Candidacy for President on Sept. 6

"Republican Fred Thompson will officially launch his presidential bid Sept. 6 in a Webcast on his campaign site, followed by a five-day tour of early primary states."

"His delayed entrance into the race _ which at one point was to occur in July _ has prompted rumblings in Washington and early primary states that he may have missed his window."

"The campaign opted for an Internet announcement because aides contend Thompson will be able to showcase an ability to take his message directly to voters. He has made extensive use of the Internet in the run up to his formal entrance into the race, and an independent Web-based draft movement generated buzz."
